Olympic-themed episode ‘Boy Meets Curl’ served as an alternative to the Winter Olympics last night, but the majority of the audience preferred to tune in to the real deal, delivering the show it’s fifth lowest ratings of all time. A total of 5.87 million viewers watched the show, slightly up on this month’s other episode ‘Million Dollar Maybe’, but largely down on average. The show was fourth-placed in its timeslot at 8.00pm. Here’s the half-hour breakdown.
Fox – The Simpsons (5.87 million)
ABC – America’s Funniest Home Videos (7.17 million)
CBS – The Amazing Race (8.90 million)
NBC – Winter Olympics 2010 (28.06 million)
Against even stronger numbers from the Winter Olympics at 9.00 (29.55 million), Family Guy pulled a total of 6.42 million viewers. The Cleveland Show had 4.85 million viewers at 8.30, while American Dad ended the night on 5.23 million viewers. Fox was third overall for the night and second among the 18 – 49 demographic.

I really enjoy the episode
I don´t understand the ratings
Lets be honest, I would have watched the Olympics instead of this as well.
Simpsons have had some tough competition recently, I only see that improving after the end of Februrary when the Winter Olympics finish.
I really loved this episode and all of the jokes in it were great! At least the ratings were higher than they were last week.
Homer: How could I ever repay you?
Boob Lady: Pay your bill.
Homer: (Drives away) I’m sorry. I missed that last part. Goodbye forever.
Lisa: Without my pearls, I’m just a big Maggie.
Agnus: You weren’t even born yet and already you ruined my life.
Seymour Skinner: That involuntary reflex that I made as an unborn child was unforgivable.
I must confess, I watched the olympics. Im addicted to them at the moment.
guys please dont give every episode 5/5. its getting annoying. I give maybe 1 episode a season 5/5
Sorry bud, it’s the internets and we do what we want.
As I’ve said elsewhere, it felt like 1 large Curling advertisement. I didn’t laugh once, it felt really stale. 1/5
maybe you’re just stale, this episode was hilarious
I mean, sacred blue.
Really enjoyed this episode (didn’t think I would after reading the reviews) Two reasons, I really enjoy the Olympics and like Lisa I had an Olympic pin collection when I was little. Pretty addicting stuff!!! 4/5
Good episode. Perhapsone of the more memorable episodes of this season. The ratings might improve in march. I hope the episodes get a bit better in the upcoming months. I would give the episode a 3/5.
I loved the episode and don’t understand these low ratigns recently!
My best bit was when we saw the opening ceromony
“who you gonna call… algeria”
“who you gonna call… argentina”
ha ha
Brian The Simpsons is not a simple comedy with cheap humor like Family Guy, the essence of the The Simpsons is not make people laugh. If the essence was make only laugh, they have not been past the first season because this one haven´t got jokes.
The Simpsons essence is be an American Society Mirror, if you want to laugh with trash humor, go to watch Family Guy.
Here we are smart humor fans
I’ve never understood why it appears if you like Family Guy, you can’t like The Simpsons? You can watch both, and just because someone has a different opinion to you….
I happen to partially agree with Brian, but I haven’t seen it, but it just seems so centric on helping the Olympic coverage.
He have his opinion, but a wrong opinion to say what are the simpsons. Because he thinks the Simpsons are a simple comedy, with only jokes, like Family Guy (With a lot of Cheap jokes)
And The Simpsons are not like family guy,
Because that, if the episode don´t make him laugh, he said that is a bad episode…
If he never is going to understand the smart humor, all simpsons episodes are going to be boring or bad episodes for him
LOL calm ur balls down there Alan…let him have his opinion
You call yourself smart, yet you applaud this garbage week after week. I sat down to watch an episode from season 8 tonight, and I was actually amazed how much I had forgotten what this show was once capable of.
In the last 10 years or so, The Simpsons has decayed into the mindless garbage that has been season 20 and season 21. The Simpsons is first and foremost an animated sitcom, and if I’m not mistaken, sitcom is an abbreviation of situational comedy.
Why was The Simpsons hilarious years ago, but not today? Have they tried turning the show into less a comedy, and more a drama? The reason I tuned into Simpsons on day 1 was to laugh, as did many others, and I’m not going to pretend that it’s continuing to make me laugh when it simply no longer does.
As a comedy, this show fails. As a drama (or “mirror to society”, whatever you want to call it), this show fails. If this episode, and many before it, didn’t have “The Simpsons” tacked on at the front, the fact is nobody would be watching. The show is relying on what it once was, on the global success it enjoyed years ago. If the series began back in season 1 with episodes of this standard, it wouldn’t have gotten much further than “Sit Down, Shut Up”.
If you’re so smart, tell me why exactly you watch this show? Am I missing something here? Are the show’s jokes so intelligent that they’re simply going over my head? I’m 20 years of age, and have watched The Simpsons since I was 8. I think by now I “get” the show’s humour. Or what it once was at least.
I can really see this type of argument becoming a weekly thing here. Blind fans defending every episode, in spite of whether it was actually any good or not. And saying my opinion is “wrong” just further cements my feeling that I’m arguing with incompetence.
On a different note, I’ll never understand why Simpsons fans hate Family Guy so much. If you don’t like it, don’t talk about it. Simple.
Surely you must agree that family guy was entirely based on the simpsons: characters, plots and even Seth Macfarlane admitted that fact. Although I DON’T hate family guy, i do think that the jokes are sometimes just dumb. BUT you’re probably right about that simpsons getting old part. 🙂
wow your 20!
dude start getting a life
no offense
You have no idea what Brian does with his life. Stop ending your arguments by telling people to get a life. I will not tolerate this kind of personal attack here. You told me the same thing two weeks ago, I did not approve your post.
So what if Brian is 20. I am 25. I own a Simpsons site. I started it when I was 12. It gives me money and provides myself an outlet to enhance and display two of my passions — website design and writing. I watch about half an hour of television a day and spend less than that maintaining this site. In December I purchased a house with my girlfriend of two years. I work full time. I also have a web design business on the side. If “life” is telling people twice your age to get a life on a Simpsons website then I guess I am not living it.
I Don´t Understand why we put ours Ages first, but I am 35, and like Adam I have much experience of life and I know what I say about The Simpsons and Family Guy.
Brian, if you want to say what did you think about the Simpsons, nobody is going to stop you, but think firts what you are going to say about the Simpsons, is going to be worse to Family Guy.
First have a look to Family Guy… Before say something about the Simpsons
Very Simple
Alan, he didn’t mention Family Guy in his original comment. He only said how poor he thought the show was. If its going to be weekly, at least use the forum to keep the blog post on topic.
As an aside, the comments looks really nifty with the ability to reply. Looks a lot neater.
I don´t know why I can´t reply Gaulty
I know that he don´t say anything about Family Guy, but he takes the Simpsons like that serie.
He only wait in a Simpsons episode a Joke that make him Laugh, and the Simpsons are not a Simple Comedy like family guy.
I say it, First have a look to Family Guy… Before say something about the Simpsons…
PD: This is my last Comment about this case.
I accept the opinions of others, without sharing, but I accept them. I am not of those who seek to influence or be influenced by the others.
I have my own opinions, not of a mass movement like others.
Definitely one of the stronger shows of the new season. Some really good Marge jokes (from her and at her). And the nice relationship between Homer and Marge hearkens back to the golden years when the shows had more heart.
I think this is the best Simpsons episode for a while. I love the Homer’s chin badge bit! And the return of the boob lady was great! Now all we need is Spider Pig…
The USA curling team has the script from this episode signed and up for auction on their web site.
They also have a signed poster…. which has no bids right now… so you can get it cheap.
Check it out…

What a fantastic episode. Season 21 is up there on my list so far. I haven’t been disappointed yet! Obviously ratings were down b/c of the olympics. Don’t make more out of it than it is.
Alan, I DID look at Family Guy first. Heck, I run a Family Guy site. I, like you, am entitled to my opinion.
For me, I watch animated shows to make me laugh. That’s my primary reason. And if, to make me laugh, a show has to do some pretty stupid stuff, then so be it. I’m not watching these shows for a lesson on sociology. I’ve studied that in college, that’s enough for me.
If you’re choosing The Simpsons as a source of something else (if not comedy, then what?), then I pity you.
Alright, you’re entitled to your opinion. If they don’t get that by now then they’re never going to. Honestly, it kind of seems like you’re here to argue. You consider the show “mindless garbage” and you’re aware that a lot of Simpsons fans hate FG so I can’t think of any other reason why you’d be here than to start this argument by bashing the show, which is fine since this is the internet and you have almost complete freedom here, but just don’t be angry or shocked when someone attacks your opinion.
Anyways, I thought the episode was great. Entertaining story and lots of good jokes. It’s been an awesome season so far.
I know I said the last comment was to be the last, but I laughed with the Brian´s comment, and I had to say…
Brian can you read again my comments, I never said that the Simpsons are not a Comedy.
I run a site too, a Simpsons site, And I never refused your opinion
You watch animated shows only to make you laugh… It´s ok, but you wait in The Simpsons, what you like of Family Guy.
You take The Simpsons like a SIMPLE COMEDY. (I never said the Simpsons are not a Comedy, I said “they are not a simple comedy” And are not)
Family Guy, has its humor
And The Simpsons, has another humor.
You wait in a Simpsons episode The Family Guy humor, you are going to laugh with a stupid stuff?
If you want laugh with simple jokes, very stupids jokes, you are going to found them in Family Guy. The Simpsons rarely have stupids jokes.
And really, I pity you, watching a serie, searching only for laughs.
PD: Topic closed for me.
Don’t say you’re not going to post again unless you actually mean it.
When is the last time you’ve actually watched Family Guy? The humour, for the most part, isn’t that outrageously different to The Simpsons. Yes, it’s usually more offensive, but that does not mean it’s any less intelligent. If it’s so stupid, can you write anything better? I asked you to tell me what parts of the episode were funny, but you were unable to. That in itself says a lot.
@Santos L. Halper I don’t just come here to argue. I blog for this site, I think that proves I’m more than just a complainer.
Brian, you have a family guy avatar in a simpsons blog. If you come here supporting the rival show, people are going to argue. Don’t get me wrong, I love family guy just as much as I like The Simpsons, but there is no need for a fight here.
I guess that would make you a blogger who complains. Just because you work for a website doesn’t make what you say any more valid. You’re just like any other fan or ex-fan. But really, why would you want to blog about something you hate? I’m assuming you get paid and if that’s the case I can’t really say anything. I’d blog about Hannah Montana if I got paid for it.
The age of animated sitcoms has passed. Both the Simpsons and Family guy are headed downhill. Being a lifelong Simpsons fan I will still tune in to each episode and enjoy it, but even the most devout fans have to admit it has lost the spark it one had. Family guy has also not made me laugh much this season. I feel like its style of comedy was funny at first but now seems recycled and old. Both were once great shows (although Simpsons was great much longer than Family guy) but it seems very pointless to bitterly defend that either show is the greatest when they are both shows that maybe should have retired by now.
Some of the people here are morons. Who cares how old we are? I’m 15 and have, and will continue to, watch the Simpsons throughout my life. It’s a damn show; there’s nothing wrong with watching it. And I don’t get the hatred between Family Guy people and Simpsons people lol, why can’t you all just agree to disagree and shut ur trap. This is a SIMPSONS site, and if people want to degrade the show, they should just go back downstairs to their mother’s basement and play with themselves. It’s a show; if you don’t like it, suck it up and make some new blog about Family Guy and vent there.
No, I don’t get paid. I never said I hated The Simpsons. Neither did I say my opinion was more valid that yours, or anyone elses.
The Simpsons and Family Guy are only ‘rival shows’ in the minds of individuals, just as some Star Wars fans will dislike Star Trek and others will appreciate both of them for satisfying their sci-fi needs (others like me think they both suck but that’s another story).
Both fans are welcome here. For a post about the ratings of The Simpsons, a lot of people got antsy about Family Guy even though it was barely mentioned! If you’re going to debate which show is better each week due to the ratings or the opinion of one of our bloggers, go debate it on a forum unspecific to either of the shows or something. You’ll be in better company. Because here you’ll just come across as a mindless fan boy. Of course the majority of people here like The Simpsons better than Family Guy. This is a SIMPSONS website. But understand that some people will like both shows, and the opinions of those people are not incorrect, they are just different to yours.
Adam – who owns all seasons of Simpsons and Family Guy on DVD and does not prefer one show over the other 😮
i don’t understand why people pick sides between the simpsons and family guy. i personally like them both.
But… simpsons will always be #1 for me, maybe not for other people, it’s their choice! not a reason to start arguing about it
and i agree with adam both fans come to this site, and both fans have the right to write whatever they feel like writing
let brian live in peace lol
i have been a simpsons fan for who knows how long and im 98% sure that i’ve seen every single episode and those short 3 minute ones they used to have but i agree with brian, i probably only watch the simpsons now because in the past i always have loved it and all the characters. if it was a new show coming out with episodes of this quality i probably wouldn’t watch it. i now actually do prefer family guy to the simpsons but still do love the simpsons too and like james said why can’t people like both?
I don’t understand why do people have need to argue after every single episode…
Even if ratings are good, there are always some that will say- “ok, it’s good only this time, but what will happen next week…”.
And I don’t even want to comment situations like this when number of viewers isn’t as high as we would like
Some old fans became very pessimistic about the future of the show, and just can’t stop pointing out that new episodes are worst then ever.
I think that Simpsons are as good as they were few years ago, and there is no reason why should someone put that question on line. I think that some viewers just don’t know what they want from this show anymore. It’s their problem, they should figure out do they want to watch Simpsons or not, but they have no rights to say that show became that bad that it should be canceled…
i’d be upset if it was cancelled… very!
the simpson the best series of history, the kings of tv,the best,i love simpson the simpson there gained 25 emmy,26 annie,6 genesis…one star in the walk of reputation in the hollywood.my favourite character is homer is my hero save springfield in the film, was pie man homer is ready but has pencil stuck in the brain which reduces their potencial mental.i love homer my idols are homer, bart, lisa, marge, maggie and matt groening, boy meets curl is great chapter.happy birhday simpson 20 years happy 56 years matt groening.
i was a little harsh on the episode, probably cos i was really tired when i watched it but i watched it again today and you know it was a pretty good episode and this season has been the best for quite a few years now..
I felt this episode was ok. I liked Lisa’s pin collection, and I do have to agree with Brian how it did somewhat feel like a curling advetisement. However, at the core of it, it was a Simpsons episode with good humor throughout. I felt awkward at the end when *shudder* Agnes was actually being nice to Seymour. I felt that instead of Marge doing all the work to save the curling career, it would have been better if Homer improved his game to show his love for Marge. Tonight’s episode seems promising.
i hate to vote 5/5 on this because although i thought it was totally fricken awesome
i hate cheesy episodes-but it really was perfect cheese.
but i gave it a 5/5 simply because i almost choked on a piece of broccoli from laughing to hard when that god forsaken upside-down-poke-mon-homer chin demon potato started dancing.
i have no idea—what i just saw…. but it was… completely… deranged… that along with, seeing Lisa finally crash and burn as a flat out pin junkie… dear god… this was genius wrapped in bacon wrapped in a jelly donut….
you need to get people watching these episodes… hire the dudes who did the Batman Begins/Dark Knight marketing to think of a Kubrick style campaign! or… something.
THOSE damn Fox people better be reading this crap somewhere out there!
come on!
