At his home in Springfield’s gay neighborhood, Waylon Smithers is crying into his Malibu Stacy pillowcase. “Why did this have to happen to me?” he wails. “Sure, he may be conservative but I’ve done nothing but serve Mr. Burns, and now that has all been taken from me.” Smithers is referring to an outrageous outing campaign recently triggered by activist members of “The Simpsons” staff and the news media. It all started last week at the San Diego Comic Convention when producer Al Jean addressed thousands of comic and animation fans about the program’s upcoming 16th season, in which a character will come out of the closet. In the wake of these comments, there has been much speculation about which character is likely to come out. “Worst rumor ever,” said Comic Book Guy who, naturally, was at the convention. He admits to once trying to pass the “final frontier” by looking at a Web site he thought contained gay pornography. Read More >>>

Shearer Slams The Simpsons
The actor behind Mr. Burns, and Ned Flanders has slammed The Simpsons, claiming the last three seasons of the show have been the “worst”. Harry Shearer believes the 15-year-old show is beginning to run out of ideas and he is getting bored providing the speech for Flanders, Burns and his assistant Waylon Smithers, Reverend Lovejoy, and Principal Skinner. Shearer says, “I rate the last three seasons as among the worst. It makes me sad. They used to have whole scenes. Season four looks very good to me now. I’d rather not be there right now. Fortunately I’m doing a lot of other things.” Shearer has also angrily denied reports the cast threatened to strike over a pay dispute earlier this year. “We were never on strike. The day those stories appeared, I was at FOX doing vocal services for that week’s show. What I can say is that’s possible to make a very nice living and still get totally screwed.”

Simpsons Out Of The Closet
One of the veteran cartoon stars of The Simpsons is coming out of the closet. The betting on who it might be would seem to favor sniveling yes-man Waylon Smithers. For years he has harbored a secret crush on his boss, the evil nuclear tycoon Mr- Burns. But the show’s producers refused to tell fans at the sci-fi and comic book gathering Comic-Con International if he’s the one. In the episode, Springfield legalizes gay marriage, and Homer Simpson becomes a minister by registering online. Matt Groening, the show’s creator, joked that Homer is the one to come out as gay. Information leaked across the net has already told us that Patty Bouvier will be the one coming out next season. Groening said he still plans to make a feature-film version of “The Simpsons,” but probably won’t start work on it until the conclusion of the T-V series. The show is heading into its 16th season and still going strong.

Bart Simpson Visits Edinburgh
He is a ten-year-old tearaway who would normally have nurses recoiling in horror at the thought of him being let loose in a hospital. But Bart Simpson will be welcomed with open arms when he appears at his namesake maternity unit in Edinburgh next month. Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart in The Simpsons – the world-famous cartoon series by Matt Groening – will visit Simpson’s maternity unit at the ERI as part of an alternative arts event to the official Edinburgh festivals. In a major coup for organisers of the Edinburgh People’s Festival, Cartwright will perform an exclusive lunchtime show for staff and patients at the Little France hospital. Colin Fox, organiser of the People’s Festival and Lothians MSP, said: “It’s not every day a 47-year-old woman delivers a ten-year-old boy in Simpson’s maternity unit.” Read More >>>

The Simpsons And Electricity
Children once baffled by how electricity works have revealed their source of understanding – The Simpsons. The satirical cartoon, based on the archetypal dysfunctional family, has unexpectedly achieved what teachers and parents have long failed to do. It was the hapless Homer Simpson, father of Bart, working at Springfield power station who inadvertently helped to explain how electricity was generated. Research carried out by the Science Museum suggested 10 and 11-year-olds responded better to the cartoon than traditional explanations of electricity. The study also found kids were confused by some energy terminology, thinking fossil fuels were connected to dinosaurs and nuclear power related to weapons of mass destruction. Read More >>>
